Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR)

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is a structured therapy approach used to treat trauma, PTSD, anxiety, and other conditions where distressing memories continue to affect daily life. Unlike traditional talk therapy, EMDR uses guided eye movements or other bilateral stimulation to help the brain reprocess difficult memories so they carry less emotional weight.

At Calm Clarity Therapy, our clinicians may use EMDR as part of individualized treatment plans for adults working through trauma, anxiety, grief, and other conditions that haven't responded fully to talk therapy alone.

How EMDR Works

A green underline.

EMDR follows a phased approach:

  1. History and treatment planning — your clinician identifies the memories and triggers contributing to current symptoms.
  2. Preparation — you learn grounding and self-regulation skills before processing begins.
  3. Processing — using bilateral stimulation, you process targeted memories while your clinician guides the session.
  4. Integration — new insights and reduced distress are consolidated into daily functioning.

Sessions are typically 50-60 minutes, and the number of sessions needed varies based on the complexity of what's being addressed.
