Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT)

DBT is a structured, skills-based therapy originally developed for intense emotional dysregulation and self-harm, and now widely used for a range of conditions where emotions feel overwhelming or hard to manage. DBT combines acceptance strategies with concrete change-based skills, helping you hold both "I'm doing the best I can" and "I need to do things differently" at the same time.

At Calm Clarity Therapy, our clinicians use DBT to help clients build emotional regulation, distress tolerance, and interpersonal skills, particularly when intense emotions or impulsive behaviors have been difficult to manage with other approaches.

How DBT Works

A green underline.

DBT is organized around four core skill areas:

  1. Mindfulness — building awareness of the present moment without judgment.
  2. Distress tolerance — learning to get through crises without making things worse.
  3. Emotion regulation — identifying and reducing vulnerability to intense, overwhelming emotions.
  4. Interpersonal effectiveness — communicating needs and boundaries while maintaining relationships and self-respect.

DBT often involves a combination of individual therapy and skills practice, with your clinician helping you apply these tools to real situations between sessions.

What DBT Treats

  • Emotion dysregulation and mood swings
  • Self-harm and suicidal ideation
  • Borderline personality disorder
  • Chronic impulsivity
  • Relationship difficulties tied to intense emotional reactions
  • Co-occurring anxiety, depression, or substance use
